Series: Xenosaga
OU/AU: OU
Canon Point: Two seconds after absorbing T-elos, Xenosaga Ep. 3
History:
I'm sorry, it would just be too painful to do anything but give you links to rundowns of the game.
Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht
Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose
Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra and This
Personality: KOS-MOS is not alone in her body, so you get the distinct pleasure of have two personality sections here.
KOS-MOS is programmed with a “Simulated Personality OS” which is tantamount to having an actual personality. While it never developed on it’s own as any human or Realian’s would, it functions exactly as any personality would. However, KOS-MOS functions primarily on logic and probability though this is by choice.
She is not friendly. Not often in any case, however she does grow close to Jin Uzuki, chaos and MOMO. Those three are probably the closest things to friends KOS-MOS has. ‘Your welcome’s’ and ‘thank you’s’ are pretty foreign to her, only ever doing as logic dictates. Some people will die by her hands but only when she determines that the odds of saving more people are worth the deaths of others (in the case where she shot Virgil on the Elsa because it increased the odds of Shion’s survival). Vector personnel always takes precedence over military personnel or civilians, as per her programming. KOS-MOS has no qualms, in the very beginning of the series, with threatening people to gain what she needs (like when she threatened captain Matthew’s right after the destruction of the Woglinde). She even had to remind Shion that she is an android, a weapon and that she should know that better than anyone.
She’s often cold and blunt, giving people direct facts no matter how much it might hurt them. If someone manages to earn KOS-MOS’ respect or even can get her to consider them a friend, she might attempt to spare their feelings.
KOS-MOS has a set of programmed objectives, all of which override current orders. The protection of Shion Uzuki overrides them all, including direct orders from Vector CEO Wilhelm or Kevin Winnicott. She’s stubborn, opinionated, one might say, because of how she works, and Shion often refers to her as a handful because she follows orders through in her own way unless given exact instructions.
This is only the programmed KOS-MOS. She has another influence. Within her sleeps the soul of Mary Magdalene, a young woman who gave her life to protect the universe. Steadily throughout the series, Mary’s soul influences KOS-MOS’ own personal development, helping her to become a bit kind and more sincere. There are even times when Mary’s own personality seems to take control. However, as KOS-MOS develops, Mary and KOS-MOS are both changing, making it more KOS-MOS than anybody.
When Mary awakes, KOS-MOS is much more human, having a desire to protect all life and asking Shion “Would feeling pain make me complete?” with the advanced nature of her construct, and the fact that she has a Simulated Personality OS, it’s logical to assume that she’s capable of feeling physical things but the function is deactivated or inaccessible. Especially after the Archetype incident.
With Mary’s influence, KOS-MOS can become a selfless being and do as Mary did: breaking past her designed purpose. She’ll become capable of making her own choices, even able to completely disobey orders from Wilhelm despite the fact that the order wouldn’t place any Vector employees in danger. And she’ll do this with the simple revelation that she is not Mary, but KOS-MOS. By the third game, KOS-MOS has become her own person but has not completely lost her robotic exterior or all of her personality quirks.
By this time, she’s completely loyal to her companions. Especially after T-elos’ attack in Rennes-le-Chateau which left her in an inoperable state. It’s thanks to the efforts of her friends and the Professor that she was able to function again and that she’s taken that final step towards becoming a new KOS-MOS without assimilating Mary’s personality into herself (yet).
The new Mary, that changed within KOS-MOS, is capable of defying Wilhelm's will, of placing her wants and needs before the universes. She places her friends before herself and protects them without fail. As much as she desires to protect the universe, her friends have become more important to her. She will protect them with as much diligence as KOS-MOS' original programming to make the protection of Vector employees one of her highest priorities. Her friends are her highest priority. She is not the original Mary any longer and is, instead, part of KOS-MOS and can't truly be called Mary.
**Mary can awaken completely within KOS-MOS and her personality will overtake KOS-MOS' own. While her awakening is rare, I feel that it's necessary to cover Mar's personality as well since her will sleeps within KOS-MOS. (I'm copy-pasting the original personality I wrote for Mary now. And if necessary, I will confirm that I am the owner of the journal animus-sorrow that the personality can be found on.)**
Mary is a kind and loving soul, whose compassion towards humans caused her to break past her intended purpose at the birth of the universe and take on a position of protecting them and the universe. The wellbeing of those around her always takes precedence over her own, much to the displeasure of those that care for her. However, this changes nothing and Mary will still place herself in harms way to protect them. Part of this is due to a number of painful events throughout her life, which makes her treasure her friends and lover, Yeshua, even more. She very much dislikes being alone, as shown in a cutscene where she drops to her knees in sorrow, watching Yeshua leave.
Her birth in the universe did not go as expected. As mentioned earlier, she has a great amount of compassion for humans. This wasn’t how things were meant to be. Human life was meant to be disposable but somewhere in the early moments of her life, a compassion for them was born and Mary refused to fulfill her purpose as originally intended. The young woman saw beyond her purpose and saw the potential that humans possessed and so sought out ways to protect them and the universe. However, her hopes were found to be slightly naïve, and in her attempts to do so, sped up the process in which Anima would trigger. Her self-confidence dropped drastically as a result of this and she took the last option available to her: She divided Anima. She gave her life, in a supreme act of love for the humans she’d taken to, to give them as much time as possible.
Along the way, Wilhelm persecuted Mary and her companions in an attempt to slow the triggering of Anima. Her friends all suffered because of him but she couldn’t ever bring herself to hate him. Truthfully, it appears as though Mary is completely incapable of hating anyone. In fact, somewhere along the way, Mary began to see Wilhelm’s point of view and eventually started to help him. If anything, at least they’d have another chance at everything as the universe is never reborn in quite the same way.
While hatred is a foreign emotion to her, anger is not. Seeing those she cares for so deeply in danger will result in her lashing out in their protection, even if she would find herself in even greater trouble as a result. Mary would gladly suffer for others and this isn’t because of some form of masochism but because she cares that deeply that her own pain doesn’t hurt her nearly as much as watching others in pain.
It also appears that her sense of loyalty is unwavering. Throughout the Lost Jerusalem Era, she stood by Yeshua, the Messiah and her friends and when it became apparent that her methods were failing, and all of her friends were persecuted, she turned her hopes to Wilhelm’s method. And, 6000 years after her death, it appears that she will still assist him in the activation of Zarathustra. If it weren’t for KOS-MOS’ personality taking dominance after a failed (well, perhaps not failed but it didn’t go as it should have) merging of Mary’s body and soul, Mary would very well have helped him in started Eternal Recurrence.
While what she did may appear that her loyalty to her friends, Yeshua and the Messiah was false, it was hardly anything like that. Mary is a devoted woman who will do anything to protect the universe and humans. And to that extent, her devotion to protecting everything took precedence over her loyalty to them. In her own mind, she was still being loyal to them and their purpose, she was just taking another path to achieve it.
Mary is also a very generous person. We can’t see this in-depth in Xenosaga but that fact that she gives up everything for others shows that she is a generous young woman. Mary is the type of person that will break herself completely for the sake of making another person happy. She feels pleasure from giving her own well-being to other people who are lacking in it. This is a huge personality flaw but it also shows, again, how loving and caring and generous she can be.
Friendly is another way to describe Mary. Among such a large group of people that followed the Messiah and being so close to Yeshua and the Maiden (Shion’s Lost Jerusalem Era incarnation), friendliness was a common trait. Without it, the group have torn themselves apart but Mary and Yeshua, in the center of it all, kept them all together and guided them.
Mary also suffers from guilt, and often. The death of the Maiden of Mary wore on her and after, the division of Yeshua’s powers. Both things she found herself directly responsible for. While the division of Anima was her fault directly, the potential for it trigger prematurely was not. The deaths of those that followed the Messiah are also on her conscience, constantly, as well as the loss of Lost Jerusalem.
And finally, we’ll cover how ambitious Mary can be. Her intentions from day one of her physical life has been to save the lives of every human being in the Lower Domain while making sure that the universe does not collapse. This is a very high goal for one whose intended purpose was to protect the integrity of the universe at the cost of life within it.
Powers:
KOS-MOS is gifted with superhuman strength and speed as part of her function to fight and destroy the Gnosis. Her body is formed from some sort of highly advanced nanomachines that allows her to morph parts of her body (specifically her arms) into various energy projectile and melee weapons. Her body is also able to self-repair and is very durable (but not indestructible as we learn during battle against T-elos), and she is also protected by a force-shield. She also possesses the ability to summon various weapons from compressed space.
KOS-MOS, although an android, is capable of using Ether (“Ether” is short for “Especial Theory of Rudimentary”) abilities. In some worlds, Ether abilities would be considered magic however these are based purely on scientific reasoning which to some degree is similar to alchemy. It refers to nanomachine abilities characters can use, which is why KOS-MOS is capable of using it.

Weaknesses:
For Mary, her personality is incredibly submissive. She can be made to feel guilty easily, manipulated into things if it means the safety of her friends and humanity and will avoid fighting as much as possible. Mary's greatest weakness is probably Yeshua/chaos and protecting him. The separation of Anima saved him as well as humanity and he's one of her primary focuses. Other than that, were she to have her own body at any point in time, Mary is extremely weak when not using Animus and defenseless. Most attacks could probably knock her back, or out, with one hit. Mary is also forced to obey Wilhelm, somehow.
KOS-MOS however, is drastically different. Physically, she has no weaknesses since she was built as a weapon. However, with enough force exerted on her, her chassis and black box components can be damaged. She can also be torn apart with enough strength. Also, with her canon point, she is required to obey the orders of Vector employees until they directly conflict with her programming or her best judgement.
Possessions:
Her weapons, while not typically carried on her, are summoned through the use of the Transfer System. So her weapons would most likely be stored wherever she picks as her residence. But, I'll put a list of her weapons HERE, some double as powers.
Her Dinah Mobile Interface, which is her monocycle and maintenance bed.
KOS-MOS will also come with changes in outfits/chassis.

Marking Location:

Miscellaneous:
KOS-MOS and Mary both share a body, so they'll both be responding at different times. This will be notable by the change in eye color. KOS-MOS is indicated by red eyes and Mary is indicated by blue eyes.
Also, anything that forces Mary into a body of her own would be hilarious. Only temporarily though. Would the Second Level work like that?
First Person:
[This was one of the few times that KOS-MOS was alone on board the Elsa, going over her own equipment and familiarizing herself with all the upgrades that Shion, Allen and the Professor had provided her with. She had no sense of shame so the clothing she was outfitted with didn't bother her in the slightest. In the recesses of her mind however, Mary was absolutely appalled.
I'd have never worn anything like this before.
Yes, well, most people were not aware of Mary's consciousness, awakening within KOS-MOS. Eyes changing from red to blue more often than they had in the past couple years since KOS-MOS's activation.]
Exterior appearance is of little consequence. This clothing does not restrain my capabilities in combat.
[Mary sighed inside her, resigned. It wasn't as though she had much of a say in this. KOS-MOS has developed so much more differently than anyone had ever expected. Mary had slept much of that time but she was aware of it. How could she not be? KOS-MOS was built to contain her will for her awakening. They were as much a part of each other as Mary, chaos and Wilhelm were the universe.]
My maximum output has increased by 60% since my last battle with T-elos.
[Mary frowned inside.
You intend to fight her again?]
It is necessary. You are still a part of me. She cannot become the "true" Mary Magdalene without you.
[She remembered that last battle. KOS-MOS had nearly been destroyed. If Mary forced herself to control...
I can win a fight against her with more ease than you, KOS-MOS.]
Third Person:
"Shion." KOS-MOS's voice was softer than usual but her eyes had remained red. The influence Mary had on her over the course of the past two years was surprising. Her heels clicked against the Elsa's floor as she entered the girls room. Shion was still a bit upset over the android nearby being destroyed and then Voyager trying to steal her.
"Shion." She said again, drawing the attention of the former Vector scientist. Shion still looked like she was exhausted, her health was degrading and it was KOS-MOS's fault. What could she do? Allowing herself to be taken offline was out of the question at this point, Shion would reactivate her or fix her at every turn. They were connected in a way that neither could truly understand. Only chaos, Mary and Wilhelm could truly understand it. The android walked over to the bed that Shion was on and sat beside her, carefully avoiding physical contact.
Was she feeling guilty? Yes, perhaps a bit. It was foreign to her but she recognized that it was, indeed, guilt. She needed to protect Shion as best she could though, things had changed since Shion's mother had suffered the same way. There would be a way to help her, there had to be.
"Thank you for saving me, Shion." KOS-MOS said simply to the scientist, her friend.

Episode I - V1 outfit
Episode II swimsuit
Episode III - V3 outfit
Episode III swimsuit
Xenosaga I.II
Marking Location:
Back of her left shoulder
